Science is how we defend and protect those who serve our Nation.

The Military Traumatic Brain Injury Initiative (MTBI2) conducts a range of traumatic brain injury (TBI) research that focuses on the minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months after injury. We are the only research organization within the Department of Defense that conducts clinical and translational TBI research across all severities in acute and subacute time points. These early time points are crucial to lessening the long-term impact of TBIs.

Since our founding in 2008, MTBI2 has conducted 145 studies and has enrolled 10,402 research participants, a majority of whom are service members. Our work is supported by our diverse, mission-driven staff. They’re respected subject matter experts across various disciplines who have world-class education and extensive training.

However, despite our knowledge, we believe that TBI patients and their families are and always will be the foremost subject matter experts. We listen to them. We learn from them. We are inspired by them. We stand shoulder to shoulder with them every day.
